pure AI content does work for SEO,
you can simply try it by publishing some AI content to some parasite (ex:medium) and it will rank,
most people fail because of getting the domain penalized (pubishing too many pages, keyword stuffed pages, etc...),

Using AI content for a long term project is not good. It is mostly suited for short term projects and needs a human touch to increase readability

Getting a 100% human score on your favorite AI detector will help in absolutely no way for ranking.
Most of what happens on page 1 is due to engagement anyway. Links get you to page 1, and engagement gets you to the top 3.

In the recent update, Google hit the AI content sites very hard because Google sees it as spammy content and irrelevant to the readers. As you said, the handwritten content was also affected by the update. Yes, it happened because of the poor-quality content and misinformation to the reader. Last week i got 2 sites approved 100% AI, this week i got another one, some in English and some in Non-English, all 100% AI content, but some of my clients got disapproved with "low value content" and after evaluating their sites the only thing that they did not had on their sites was good indexing rate.
We are now certain that if a site has very low indexing rate or it is sandboxed having only few pages indexed, then Google will mark it "low value content", they are using indexing/sandbox effect as parameter of low/high value content.
